Nose reshaping surgery, also known as rhinoplasty and commonly referred to as a ‘nose job’ is a popular facial cosmetic surgery operation.

Mr Chris Fenn, consultant plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, regularly performs nose reshaping surgery on men and women who are unhappy with the size and/or shape of their nose.

What is a nose reshaping operation?

A rhinoplasty or ‘nose job’ is an operation performed to change the appearance of the nose.  A ‘reduction rhinoplasty’ makes the nose smaller by removing segments of the nasal skeleton whilst an ‘augmentation rhinoplasty’ makes the nose larger by adding more bulk, often using grafts to build up the nose.

What are the benefits of rhinoplasty surgery?

Men and women who opt for rhinoplasty surgery often say that they have been unhappy with their nose for many years. They may feel their nose is too big, too small, misshapen or out of proportion with the rest of their facial features. As a consequence, they feel self-conscious when in public and embarrassed by their facial profile.

Rhinoplasty surgery improves the shape and size of the nose, creating a more balanced look. Patients that choose to have their nose reshaped tend to feel much more comfortable with their own body image after the operation and subsequently have more self-confidence.

Am I suitable for rhinoplasty surgery?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose – whether it is too large, too small, crooked or asymmetrical, then you may be suitable for a rhinoplasty. Common problems such as a prominent lump on the top of the nose or a full, rounded nasal tip can be effectively corrected with rhinoplasty surgery.

If you are considering surgery, the first step is to arrange a consultation with Mr Chris Fenn. After an examination of your nose and a discussion about your medical history, Mr Fenn will be able to confirm your suitability for the operation.

It is important to note that the objective of a ‘nose job’ is not to create perfection but to improve the appearance by adjusting the existing nose. With this in mind, you must assess your expectations to ensure they are realistic before you decide to proceed with surgery. To ensure you make an informed decision, Mr Fenn will encourage you to ask questions during the consultation. He will also advise you to take your time to think about the procedure before you go ahead.

What does rhinoplasty surgery involve?

Nose reshaping surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic. It takes between 90 minutes - 2 hours and involves an overnight stay in hospital.

A.  Reduction rhinoplasty

To make the nose smaller, incisions are usually made inside each nostril so there are no visible scars. Through the incisions, bone and cartilage are removed and/or repositioned. The skin is then re-draped over the new shape. In some cases, the nostrils will also need to be reduced. This will involve small cuts in the skin which will leave very fine scars on each nostril.

B. Augmentation rhinoplasty

To make the nose larger, incisions are made inside or between each nostril. Similar to a reduction rhinoplasty, bone and cartilage are reshaped and repositioned. To create bulk and build up the nose, a bone or cartilage graft may be required.  Cartilage may be taken from your ears and bone may be taken from a rib or hip. Artificial implants may be used as an alternative. With no external cuts, there are no visible scars and the skin remoulds around the new nose. On occasions when better access is required, a small cut is made between the nostrils (open approach) leaving a small scar across the skin between the nostrils. It is usually very difficult to see once it has healed.

How long does it take to recover?

You will have a supportive splint on your nose for approximately 1 week after the operation. Painkilling medication will help you to manage any pain and discomfort that you experience shortly after the surgery.

Your nose will feel congested initially and you will have mild bruising on your upper face, around your eyes. This should settle within a couple of weeks.

You will be able to see an improvement in the shape of your nose immediately after the splint has been removed; however it will take up to 6 weeks for the swelling to settle. You will see the final shape around 3 months after surgery – once the skin has adjusted to the new nasal structure.

It is likely that you will be able to return to work 2 weeks after your surgery although you should avoid strenuous activity for several weeks after surgery to avoid injuring your nose.

You will have a number of follow-up appointments with both the cosmetic surgery nursing team and Mr Fenn to ensure that your nose is healing as it should.
